Is Your Merlin Garage Door Opener Not Working? This Might Be Why
At PDS Garage Doors we’re proud to partner with Merlin, whose garage doors and accessories are always manufactured to the highest standard. But on rare occasions, customers may face an issue with their garage door, or door opener. Fortunately, these issues are usually easy to fix.
Let’s dig into five potential reasons why your Merlin garage door or opener may not be working, and what to do about it.
For personalised advice, contact our team at PDS Garage Doors today.
1. The Battery Inside the Remote Isn’t Working
If you have a Merlin garage door, you’ll know your portable door opener has a battery-operated remote control. Sometimes the door simply isn’t working because the remote has run out of battery. To check this, first step out of your car, stand close to the garage door and try the portable opener.
That didn’t work? Try finding the remote mounted on the wall inside the garage instead. If you press the button and the garage door opens, congrats! All you need to do is replace the battery in the portable operator.
But if one or both remotes don’t work at any distance, even after changing the batteries, there might be an issue with the signal between the remotes and the door.
If that’s the case, it might be time to give us a call for some professional guidance.
2. Your Garage Door Won’t Close Properly
Are you using your portable opener to close the garage door, but it won’t go all the way to the floor? This is usually what happens when the safety sensor, and specifically the photoelectric beams, are in some way obstructed. In this case, for safety reasons, the door won’t close fully.
But what happens if there are no physical objects in the sensor’s path? Your sensor may be misaligned or otherwise damaged. Again, in this case, it might be time to call a professional for help.
3. Your Door Reverses Before Reaching the Floor
Here’s another one: the door starts to close, but then unexpectedly heads in the other direction. What’s going on? It’s likely the close force setting in your door isn’t working properly. The door rollers are sending a message to your portable opener that the door is closing, even though it’s not.
This is a more complicated issue that may require support to fix. Get in touch with our team today, as your garage door likely needs a service.
4. The Garage Door Has a Broken Spring, Hinge or Cable
A garage door requires many parts to work correctly. If a spring is broken, a cable has disconnected or you’re seeing other physical damage, we recommend getting in touch with us to discuss the issue.
We may be able to assist over the phone, but if not, let’s arrange an inspection.
Still Got Issues? Contact Us For a Garage Door Inspection
As an authorised Merlin seller, PDS Garage Doors can assist with any garage door or garage door opener issues, including unexpected stops, starts and grating sounds. Get in touch with us to arrange an inspection with an authorised Merlin technician.
Also make sure to check your Merlin warranty, as this may affect which services you are eligible for. Whether your garage door needs to be replaced, repaired, or simply reviewed, our team is happy to help.
In The Meantime, Learn What To Do in Case of Emergencies
Of course, extra care along the way never goes astray. We recommend owners inspect their garage door setup every month to ensure everything is working. We also encourage regular maintenance, from light cleaning to a proper service every few years from an authorised technician.
It’s also important to consider your plan in case of emergencies. If a heatwave, storm or other natural disaster came your way, could you rely on your door to open without issues? Would you be able to manually open the door during a power blackout or other crisis?
If you’re unsure of the above, read on for some safety recommendations.
- If power isn’t available, Merlin garage doors can still be opened using a red manual release cord. This cord is usually attached to one side of the door, near the opening.
- Every person in your house should know where this cord is, how to operate it, and whether it’s in working order, based on regular checks.
- If the red cord needs to be used, pull it down firmly to release the door’s locking mechanism. Your portable opener will make a clicking sound.
- Manually push up the door, without using the release cord.
- Operate the manual release on the door with care, to avoid injury or damage.
- Once you get power back, or the situation is safe, re-engage the door’s opening mechanism by firmly pulling on the cord.
